Tracing Worksheets for 3 Year Olds

Extra-big, simple tracing pages for three-year-olds — straight lines, curves and circles with start dots. Print the pack or pick pages.

Tracing worksheets for 3 year olds are printable pages of big, dotted lines and shapes that a young child can follow with a crayon or finger. This page builds a ready-to-print pack of them right in your web browser. It is free, needs no sign-up, and nothing you choose is uploaded to a server.

The pack has 10 extra-big pages plus an optional cover. Each page has only 3 to 5 rows with wide spacing, so there is room for a wobbly line. The lines include straight, standing, slanted, loops, waves, zigzags, circles, plus signs, simple shapes, and mountain, stair and castle paths.

Every line starts at a green dot and ends at a star, so your child always knows where to begin and where to stop. Red arrows show the direction.

How to print tracing worksheets for 3 year olds

  1. Look at the list of pages above the preview. All pages are selected by default, each with a checkbox.
  2. To choose pages, tick the boxes you want. Use “Clear” to untick everything, or “Select all” to tick every page again.
  3. Check the preview of the selected pages. It updates as soon as you change a setting.
  4. Tick “Cover page” if you want a cover titled “My Tracing Book” with a big dotted star and a Name line.
  5. Set Tracing style, Green start dots, Direction arrows and Name and Date line to suit your child.
  6. Choose the paper size: US Letter or A4.
  7. Click “Print all” to send the selected pages to your printer, “Download PDF (n pages)” to get one PDF with every selected page, or “Copy link” to copy a link that reopens the same settings.

Choose your paper size before you print or download, because the pages are laid out for the size you pick. Every page is portrait, so you do not need to change the orientation. The PDF prints at true size, which keeps the big lines big. Use “Copy link” to keep your settings for a later print run.

Can a 3 year old do tracing worksheets?

Yes, many 3 year olds can trace simple lines, although skill varies widely from child to child. At this age, many children are moving from random scribbling to controlled marks. Copying a vertical line, a horizontal line and a circle are typical early skills.

Tracing asks a child to keep a mark inside a path, which needs steady hand control. Thick crayons or chunky pencils are easier to hold than thin ones. The wide spacing on these pages leaves room for a shaky line, and the green dots and arrows show the route, so the child does not have to guess.

What should a 3 year old trace first?

Start with the straight lines, then move to the standing and slanted lines. These are closest to the vertical and horizontal lines many 3 year olds are learning to copy. Circles and plus signs come next, since they need a curved or crossing movement.

Loops, waves, zigzags, shapes and paths come last. They add turns, changes of direction and longer routes, which are harder to keep inside the lines. Let your child trace with a finger first, then switch to a crayon once the finger version feels easy. Work through the pages in the order listed, or pick a page that matches what your child can already copy.

Getting more from each page

Three-year-olds like doing the same thing again, and the pack is easy to reuse. Slide a page into a clear plastic sleeve and trace it with a dry-erase marker, so it can be wiped and traced again. Print a second copy with the Grey tracing style: a solid light line is easier to follow than dots for the very first tries, and dots become the next step. Trace each line with a finger first and say where it goes (“down, down, down” or “up the mountain, down the mountain”), then with a chunky crayon. Colour the star at the end of each line when the child reaches it.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a tracing session be for a 3 year old?

Keep sessions short. Use one page at a time and stop while your child is still having fun, which often means after a few minutes. Ending on a good line is better than pushing for one more page.

What if my child scribbles instead of tracing?

Scribbling is normal at this age and does not mean your child is behind. Try finger tracing first, or draw a few big straight marks and circles with a thick crayon. Return to the pages once your child is ready to follow a path.

Is the pack free?

Yes. The generator is free and needs no sign-up, and nothing is uploaded or sent to a server. The only cost is the paper and ink you use to print.

Can a 4 year old use these tracing worksheets?

These pages are made for 3 year olds, but a 4 year old who still wants practice with lines can use them too. Choose the pages that match your child’s level, such as the shapes or paths, rather than starting from the first page.

Should a 3 year old use a pencil or a crayon?

A thick crayon, a chunky pencil or a short crayon piece is easier for small hands than a thin pencil. Finger tracing first is fine too.
